Bringing Style To Your Bedroom

Whits bedroom1, detail 1

Do you just view your bedroom as a functional room where you go to bed, sleep and wake up and feel that there really is no need to make it special? Is it a room that nobody else sees, so why bother? However, it’s a room that you probably spend more than a third of your life in and here at Style My Home, we think it’s important to make it a really personal room that is an expression of you, which reflects your favourite colours and the things you love to have around you. We hope our article changes your mind and gives you some ideas and inspiration.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your bedroom had the “wow” factor? Style My Home looks at how your bedroom can be completely transformed to look stylish and polished. It could be a complete makeover or it could just involve adding a few accessories to make it more attractive and appealing. The bedroom should be a calming room that you enjoy going to, a place where you can relax, sleep and love to wake up in, surrounded by all your favourite things.

Declutter And Plan

First of all, you need to create harmony and decluttering is a great way to start. You will then have a blank canvas where you can start planning your dream bedroom. Think about the things that you need in your bedroom and make sure you have good storage options, so that you can stay free of clutter. Think carefully about the colours, tones, patterns and textures that you want to use, as these will pay an important part in creating a room, which is peaceful, calm and soothing or dramatic and romantic.

Colour, Flooring And Furniture

If you choose more subtle tones, adding accessories can introduce colour, tone and texture to the room. Many people forget about the ceiling, but this is really important as painting ceilings in darker tones or having a textured finish can look amazing and be really atmospheric. Just remember as you lay in bed, it’s the ceiling that you are often staring at. Wallpaper isn’t everyone’s thing, but a statement wallpaper wall could really work or a bold coloured painted wall. Are you happy with the flooring in your bedroom or would you like it replaced with wooden flooring, tiles or a new carpet? You may be using furniture that you have already but if not, think carefully about the size of the furniture, as heavy large furniture will be overpowering in a small room.

Storage

Storage should never be overlooked and think carefully if you want a freestanding wardrobe or a custom-designed system, as the latter will usually give you more flexibility and extra storage for your things, particularly your clothes. Add a high chest of drawers for maximum storage and introduce a chest at the bottom of the bed or an attractive ottoman for linen storage. A bed with drawers or lift up storage or storage units designed to go under the bed are the answers for storage in a small room.

Accessories

  • Pillows and cushions
  • Throw blankets
  • Rugs
  • Lighting including lamps and shades
  • Bedding
  • Artwork
  • Headboard
  • Personal items

Throws, Rugs And Cushions

A throw blanket or rug can add a splash of colour and add instant contrast if your bedroom has neutral tones. Carefully arrange throws on the bed or on a chair, so they are ready for you to snuggle into if you are watching the television or reading a book. The bed of course takes up a lot of space, so make it an attractive and interesting feature by placing a few pillows or cushions on it to give it that cosy feel. You may also want to change the bed linen and introduce more texture and pattern and a bed can really come to life by adding a headboard, and you will find that a tall headboard can be used to dramatic effect and be a real focal point. Also, why not indulge in luxurious fabrics?

Lighting, Curtains And Personal Things

Lighting can make a real impact, so consider bedside lamps or a floor lamp. If you have a ceiling light, why not add a chandelier to add sophistication and romance, but make sure you always have a dimmer switch. Rugs will add texture and will complement tiled and wooden floors and can also be placed on top of a carpet.

If your room has small windows, blinds may be a good option but in a larger room you can be quite opulent with your fabrics. Consider if you need blackout blinds. To make the room really personal to you, add special things such as photographs, a piece of art or things you have collected on your travels.

Trend Spotting: Peach & Terracotta

Say “hello” to Peach this 2018 – this ranges from salmon, coral and terracotta to a dusky rose. This burnt orange-inspired tone takes over from last year’s must-have Millennial Pink. It’s soft and powdery shades offer a fresh palette and a mellow new neutral, perfect if you are not able to face yet another grey. Embrace nature and go for apricot, dusky rose and terracotta shades with accents of natural wood. Warmer textures such as brass, natural wood and velvets enhance these peach tones, creating a modern and grown-up alternative to pinks, with a base colour that is really easy to team with anything!

Need some more inspiration? Here’s how we would style the must-have colour of 2018 – Peach!
